Held every July in Redmond, Washington, Potlatch is one of the largest co-ed ultimate tournaments in the world. The WFDF World Ultimate Club Championships (WUCC) are held every 4 years, bringing together the best ultimate club teams from around the world for a 7 day competition.

The first WUCC was held in Cologne, Germany in 1989, and until 1999 was held every 2 years. Other host cities have been Toronto, Canada (1991), Madison, Wisconsin, USA (1993), Millfield, UK (1995), Vancouver, Canada (1997), St Andrews, Scotland, UK (1999), Honolulu, Hawaii, USA (2002) and Perth, Australia (2006).

The World Flying Disc Federation (WFDF) owns WUCC, determines hosting rights, allocates team slots to its member National Associations and oversees all technical aspects of the competition. Information on the history, activities and future events of the World Flying Disc Federation can be found on the WFDF website.

WFDF granted hosting rights for WUCC 2010 to the Czech Flying Disc Association in 2008. The WUCC 2010 Organizing Committee began forming during 2007, and all key roles were filled by the winter of 2008. The Committee has considerable experience in the management of frisbee sporting events, and many of them were members of the 2001 European Ultimate Club Championships organizing committee.

“Yeah.  Are you game?”

“Of course!”

Everyone at Polatch got to pick a card at random, 2 through Jack, and the Ultimate goal was to get an Ace, which could be traded in for a sweet pair of limited edition custom Five Hydro Shorts.  In order to get a higher card than the one in your hand, you needed to find someone with a higher card and trade cards through a Dare Challenge.  As Dealers with numerous face cards, Five employees were able to give out many Dare Challenges to those who dared to ask.  My personal highlight: Watching my friend purposefully trap himself in a net and then “scream for help” until someone was willing to come over and “untangle” him.  Oh Potlach.

2. Card Game that resulted in crazy dares and sweet shorts as prizes

3. An expansion to two giant tents, ones for merch, and one for chillin’

This will be an awesome chance to test out your new squad or introduce newcomers to the best that ultimate has to offer. This Year’s Summary

“The Northwest’s first major Fall tournament of the season brought the best of Northwest Fall weather to Corvallis, OR – wind, rain, mud and all. Saturday opened with promising sun and light winds but by round three, gaia was blowing rain chunks and slapping discs with strong winds, which turned the beautiful Corvallis pitches into beautiful Corvallis mudpits. Sunday weather was comparably milder but the damage had been done, eliciting a gauntlet of mud layouts and dirtied white jerseys. Although early in the season, many split squad teams were surprised by upsets and others charmed by gorgeous lady victory. In the end, winners of this year’s 1st Annual OMG! both call Oregon home.

In the Open Division, regional powerhouses Western Washington and UW split into three and two squads respectively, and in giving a lot of rookies a test-drive couldn’t capitalize past a Saturday re-seed. Expected strong performances from split squad U of O  landed spots in semi-finals and finals before both being trounced by the veteran line of Oregon-alum and local jobbers on Lane Community College – the tournament open champs. Notable performances from South Eugene brought the High School team to the quarters, while a split-squad University of Puget Sound showed some brawn with unexpected victories that placed one team in the quarters and one in a losing battle against Reed for 9inals. The Women’s division added more fuel to the Oregon/Washington rivalry as both split teams fought their way to the quarters before matching up UW-Y vs. U of O-Y in the finals. The Oregon-Y squad walked away with the OMG! championship after a dominant 7-0 weekend.  Other notables, the Whitman Sweets, opened Saturday with an impressive 4-0, seeing victories over UW-X that landed them in a close loss against UW-Y in the semis. Sand and Sun in Seaside

July 13^th 2009

The atmosphere in Seaside Oregon, the location of the 2009 Against The Grain tournament was rife with anticipation and excitement.  Teams ventured from all corners of the North West to participate in this fun, and spirited competition.  The highlight of the weekend experience came after a slightly lopsided game early on Saturday.  The MoHo team had just won by a less than competitive margin, the teams lined up  and high fived half heartedly.  There was much milling around comments on the overcast day, a general lack of energy was evident.  All of a sudden the MoHo team decided not to end the game in such a lame fashion.  A contingent ran to the competition and challenged them to a huge game of Ninja Warrior.  For the uninitiated here is a break down: The group forms a circle, one fist in, on the count of three the entire group pivots out into a ninja stance.  The object of the game is to hit the other player’s hands in one “ninja” movement while keeping your pivot.  Our game included upwards of 20 players all committed to winning to preserve their ninja pride.  The game went on and on, everyone was smiling joking and cheering for the other teams ninjas.  The end result was a few beers exchanged and best wishes in the next games for each side.  It was a shining example of how community and interaction between two teams can always lift the weight of competition, even on a storming, cold Saturday on the Oregon Coast.
